Rose Garden, Plan
I am so proud of myself. I actually drew a to-scale plan for the future rose garden. I am usually a garden-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of person, but lately I've been craving a bit more organization. I'm tired of having a plant ghetto, for one thing. But also I'd like this garden to have some underlying structure and symmetry, and for that I felt that a drawing was the best option.
At the bottom of the garden is the shed, which I hope to make into a summer house / planting shed / getaway of some time. But it cuts the corner out of the space, so I filled in next to it with a large grape arbor, which both provides a great feature (both for the grapes and the arbor), and also then creates a boundary forming a nearly square area in the center of the space.
And in the center, a parterre of raised beds with an weeping willow-leaf pear as a center focal point (Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula'). I already have this tree and I'm excited to give it a good home. Poor thing has been moved about a dozen times. I've got peaches in the corners, and the rest will be roses, herbs and perennials. I've got room for 12 roses and 8 climbers. I'm so happy!
Of course, I can't afford to put this all in at once. But I can chip away at it. First step is to get the pear tree settled asap, before it leafs out. Oh yes, and figure how to organize the roses. I have a list of roses started, thanks to all of you (thank you!). I'm going with all pinks (both light and dark) and yellows/apricots for colors. But do I mix them all up? Do blocks of a color family together? I've got the corners and the climbers and I want something that's harmonious and soothing. Hmmmm....

P.S. For those of you wondering about my Saturday Survey, yes, I'm still doing it. And I am taking pictures every Saturday. But there's not a whole lot different in a week, so I'll post an update on the first Saturday of each month. Feel free to join in! :-)

I like to draw plans! Things don't always work out. Inevitably, the plants on my "wish list" won't be available locally and then I debate the online ordering thing. We have so many local plant nurseries that I like to support.

I love your plans!! They're so well constructed, documented, and detailed-- a great head-start for your spring garden. I've been rooting roses this winter (http://blog.doleaf.com/2009/01/12/new-growth-on-rose-cuttings/) and just got an offer to dig up 2 rosebushes. I have 2 beds (4 by 7; 3 by 6) and some space in the front of our house for roses, but have no plans for the plantings yet. Starting to think I should draw up some. ;)

Fabulous, Angela! I can't wait to see it evolve, and what a show you will have in springtime.
Will you be constructing the trellises yourself or hiring that out?

I actually wasn't surprised when you showed me your to scale drawing because it seems more natural that your sense of order would enjoy starting with a grid plan...I love it!
I was very proud of myself for doing the same thing with my monastery garden plan. And as you know I haven't completed mine either. A work in progress.
I like the idea of mixing the colors up but I feel like you generally enjoy color blocks more. You really should go with your gut on that one and I think you already know what that answer is.

Hi Angela
This is my first visit to your blog but certainly not the last. I'm looking forward to seeing the garden progress. Your plan looks great.
I recently planted a number of rambling roses as I've built a pergola. I think I'm going to have to put 'pen to paper' as it were and plan the complimentary planting as this is probably also the sensible way to budget!
Great blog,

I once planted a row of roses--each a totally different color. It never looked eyecatching--too many colors. Go for groups of pinks and groups of apricot/yellows. Have fun!

Good afternoon. Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you walk into an open sewer and die. Help me! Looking for sites on: Dark tanning bed lotion. I found only this - tanning bed shocks. It only makes sense that changing the colour of your skin would be dangerous by any means. Having tanned, beautiful skin makes people feel better about him or herself. Thank you very much :-(. There have been times of hardship when I felt unhappy missing knowledge about opportunities of getting high yields on investments. I was a dump and downright pessimistic person.
I have never imagined that there weren't any need in big starting capital.
Nowadays, I'm happy and lucky , I begin to get real money.
It's all about how to choose a proper partner who uses your money in a right way - that is incorporate it in real deals, parts and divides the profit with me.
You may ask, if there are such firms? I have to tell the truth, YES, there are. Please be informed of one of them:

Hi. I used to believe that marriage would diminish me, reduce my options. That you had to be someone less to live with someone else when, of course, you have to be someone more.
